BUILDING ON A BUDGET

Learn and create without breaking the bank
2-3 hour Introductory prerequisite session; $80
Price and duration for hands-on sessions vary by project

The Building on a Budget workshop is tailored to the average homeowner with a focus on building functional projects for the home using inexpensive, big box store lumber. In this workshop participants will create simple projects from simple plans that will look good in the home and are inexpensive to build.

Projects offered will vary per class on a rotating basis. Most projects will be completed in a single day, 3-4 hour session after completion of a separate prerequisite session. Some projects may span two 3-4 hour sessions. Example Building on a Budget projects include:

  • Hallway Mirror

  • Storage Shelf

  • Bench

  • Wall Storage Unit

  • Wall Craft Organizer

  • Step Stool

Participants will complete a 2-3 hour prerequisite session to gain an overview of home improvement, DIY tools including:

  • Circular saw,

  • Drill,

  • Pocket hole jig,

  • Finish/brad nailer,

  • Jigsaw,

  • Hand sander,

  • Random orbital sander,

  • Miter saw,

  • Job-site table saw, and

  • Basic hand tools

During the prerequisite session participants will practice using these tools on wood provided by Wesley Michael Woodworking.

Completion of the prerequisite session is required prior to participation in the hands-on portion of the Building on a Budget workshop. This prerequisite session is offered twice a month, and could also be a great standalone session for those interested in learning more about home improvement tools. This session is intended to provide an introduction to these tools and a foundation sufficient for participation in the subsequent hands-on Building on a Budget sessions.

The hands-on sessions will vary by project, but in a typical session participants will receive:

  • an overview of the DIY project plans, and

  • step-by-step guidance to build the project.

At the end of the Building on a Budget hands-on session, participants will bring home their handcrafted piece.
